Doesn't matter for the point of the argument, he was elected on that promise, and others, that he eventually broke.

It was so transparent that it was going to happen, I really question if anyone legitimately believed it.
Might as well have literally voted for the fox to be in charge of the hen house. ‘Oh no, but they promised they wouldn’t do that!’

If only there had been clues he might be a liar... Really, it was completely unexpected, he used to be so honest.
If you want to argue the problem is he got "assimilated" then you have to argue he originally would have made a real attempt to fulfill the promise. My assessment is: no way.
