the barrier to spinning up an alternative European Android operating system given that it's open source is not that high, see China, and my money would be on that happening within the next few years.

Wow, that's a deal breaker for me. I don't need yet another service that's only accessible to a dumbed down device. Here I was hoping that it'd become available in my country as well...
