I do believe people still vote for dictatorship if they think it will fuck over others much harder, then themselves, and "they deserve it".

A government with total control over the population can turn into whatever it pleases, whenever it pleases. A catalyzing crisis can always be manufactured.

An autocracy or illiberal democracy is perfectly possible. It's happened to several countries recently. And Russia at this point is a dictatorship.
You don’t need the country to become a dictatorship. Private companies will gladly do the job of surveillance and selling your data.
But also, lower your guard long enough and it might be taken over by any of two or three religious groups that only seem to be growing.
