Maybe it’s not career-ending, but it’s definitely career-hurting. Being welcomed and mentioned by popular indie devs, bloggers, and power users is a way of breaking onto the scene. If those people now actively distrust you, maybe your current app(s) can continue to thrive for a while, but whatever you release next won’t get much traction from those same circles. Ben Surtees is another dev who scorched their name, by sneakily selling their app which required a bunch of permissions (and thus trust).
