I've actually been wanting to try to raise my own. There is a freshwater member of the sardine/anchovy family native to Australia, Thryssa lackeyii. They're more towards the sardine size than anchovy, and they might (or might not) have an awful flavor. But they're not on the list of prohibited-for-import organisms, and I believe I'd just have to pay the fee for inspection on arrival.
