motivation is absolutely huge. There was a survey of language learners iirc and the most common reason for learning a language all the way to fluency was because it was a a significant other's mother tongue.
Heck, thats my motivation for my language learning right now!
I've heard people say that once you get one learned this way, other languages are easier, because you're much more clear eyed about the process (though few truly go beyond 4 or 5 to a high level)
