This reminds me of when people were calling the UK a bunch of wimps for complaining about record high heat of like 80F, just because Americans have been dealing with 100F or more for years (over 100 years in some cases). So what that prices in Europe have already been higher? Prices in America haven't been, so it's a shock to them.

More of a shock, if anything - the higher taxes in Europe act to damp price swings, so sudden rises like this hit America proportionately more.
