This is an asking to ask situation. You can just talk via text messages.

This sounds like a waste of time. Why waste over half an hour on a conversation that can be finished probably within a single minute.
If you have kids, you’ll probably be happy that they want to talk to you for 30 minutes as freshmen in college!
The only real surprise here is that this was the author’s first experience of such a thing.
