The funny part and why it was understood to be preposterous in 1985/1986 when Back to the Future came out, is that the DeLorean was not particularly fast at all, and shipped from the factory with a very anemic engine relative to its weight and cost. Its 0-60 speed was something like 8.8 to 10.5 seconds. For comparison a modern Kia Carnival minivan has a 0-60 time of 7.0 seconds.
