I don’t know why this isn’t the majority opinion here in this western audience, but this seems like common sense to me. Why would you let the gov use foreign technology, particularly when standing in for human thought, when you have your own technology to choose from? No one is surprised we’re not buying military planes from China.

Calling companies operated by, and for the investor class "your own" is doing some awfully heavy lifting here.

The discrepancy you're recognizing is surely due to astroturfing. I know it's an unsavory thing to point out, but it's also very obvious.

The US government should not be sending its data to a foreign adversary. Doesn't matter if we're talking about AI services or just general compute and data hosting. This is an obvious choice for obvious reasons.

When I worked with government agencies as a cloud engineer, we had to use AWS GovCloud. Like, we were forbidden from using non-GovCloud despite AWS being a US company. So with that level of security scrutiny being in-place well before LLMs became a thing, it is no surprise that allowing government employees to send sensitive information directly to the Chinese government wouldn't be allowed lol

> Why would you let the gov use foreign technology

because it could be much cheaper, efficient and surprise risk-free (no vendor locking when you use open model/infra) in certain cases

> No one is surprised we’re not buying military planes from China.

No one is surprised that US government uses HUGE amount of items produced in China

Totally agree, my gov should ban google/openai/anthropic/ms/etc. Like, somewhat seriously
