Not a single comment on how an individual can prevent this? Or is there no way to protect from one’s identity getting stolen and used this way ? What can the rest of us learn from this so that we stack the odds in our favor?
I was scared just reading the article.
You can freeze your credit with all 7 credit rating agencies (Experian, Equifax, Trans Union, and the 4 smaller ones whose names I always forgot) although that may not have protected this case because it is alleged Cash App does not pull your credit before opening an account.
Also opening a Cash App account yourself (even if you don't use it) is weak protection because they allow multiple accounts.
So if there as a defense I don't know what it is. Hope that identity fraud done with your info doesn't happen in a state with aggressive yet lazy/careless law enforcement.
As long as qualified immunity exists, no citizen is safe from this kind of terrorism.
There's no such thing as identity theft. Individual companies can be defrauded when they don't do sufficient checks. The companies that do sufficient checks don't get defrauded. You can't prevent someone else's incompetence.
As for being subject to prosecution for crimes that you didn't commit, you can either live in a jurisdiction where the justice system works more effectively, or else be rich and have a good lawyer.
