Over a couple of years, I applied to a couple dozen CS grad programs with an admissions essay about music, AI, and CS.

The academy doesn’t give a sh*t. Nothing but rejections across the board.

How did it reach a point where doctors of philosophy don’t want anything to do with deeper mysteries?

I think typically you need to apply somewhere where there is a professor (mentoring grad students) who specializes in, or does research in, the field your proposed thesis is in. You said you applied to a couple dozen programs, that seems very high to me. Was this spaced out over time, or did you do a bulk dump after graduation? The application fees alone are unpleasant to think about. How were your GREs?
