I don't have a book recommendation but in terms of topics, I would definitely suggest Shamir's secret sharing scheme as a good one to cover. It is pretty accessible mathematically (if you stick to prime finite fields) and "different" enough to the usual conception of a secret code or cipher to make it fun to play around with as well.
