I was once an avid reader of Salon when I was younger and lived in the Bay Area. I'd check in almost daily going back to when George Bush Jr was in office pointing his finger at Saddam Hussein.
One of my later work friends, who became my CTO at InfoWorld, had worked at Salon as his previous gig. He spoke fondly of his time there. Salon was always digital-only long before that was chic in the magazine business. At InfoWorld we weren't forced to do it until the mid-2000s, a good 10 years after Salon did in the mid-90s, when the internet was just awakening in pop culture.
I stopped reading Salon over 15 years ago, but it's still surprising to see. That includes realizing they lasted this long in the first place through all the ups and downs (mostly downs) of the low CPM ad markets.
