This is a very common misconception Americans believe about the hilux. I’ve owned multiple generations of both on different continents.

The Tacoma is much heavier, but has a much lower payload rating. It has way less torque, and gets much worse fuel economy. The Tacoma only comes with a regular bed- no cab chassis, no tray back, etc.

The Tacoma is much more expensive. The Tacoma only exists in two countries. The hilux is one of only a few truly global vehicles.

One is a genuine work utility vehicle, one is a lifestyle vehicle.

They have never shared a frame, engine, transmission, axles or body panels.

They are not related, and are not similar.
